Dental veneers are small, thin, custom-made shells of porcelain or resin. These shells match the natural color of your tooth and are placed over it to improve its appearance. Veneers are typically used to:
Because veneers attach to your regular teeth, they do not require any special care beyond brushing, flossing and other regular good oral hygiene practices.
Receiving veneers typically takes a little planning and, on average, about three trips to the dentist. These visits consist of the consultation, the preparation and the application.
Your first visit consists of an initial consultation where you and your dentist will work together to find the best way for veneers to help you. Your dentist will then examine your teeth and possibly take X-rays and make impressions of your mouth and teeth depending on your needs.
During your second visit, your dentist will prepare your teeth. This involves removing about a ½ millimeter of enamel from your tooth’s surface, which is about the thickness of a veneer. This allows for all of your teeth to be even and consistent after the veneer is placed over it. Your dentist will also make an impression of your tooth which will be sent to a dental laboratory to construct your veneer. This construction process usually takes 2-4 weeks to complete.
On your final visit, your veneer will be permanently placed or bonded to your tooth. During this process, your dentist will make any necessary changes to ensure that the coloring and fit of the veneer is just right. Then, your tooth will be etched and the veneer is put into place. The final step involves an ultraviolet light to harden the veneer and bond it into place.
